This year’s LACMA Art + Film Gala honored James Turrell & Alejandro Inarritu, and the guest list was pretty A-list, which makes me happy. I was going to groan about the bad fashion on display, but honestly… some of these looks are so bad that I’m genuinely enjoying them. There have been so many boring red carpets lately, so it’s exciting when a design house like Gucci sponsors an event, forces most of the Fashion Girls to wear their clothes, and then half of them look terrible.
Take Dakota Johnson up there. Dakota is a newly-minted movie star and a burgeoning Fashion Girl. I like that she’s not all about showing skin, and there’s nothing wrong with going for a more conservative look. But this Gucci is AWFUL. It looks like something a 70-year-old widow would have worn. In 1959. Is it the terrible rancid-mustard color? Is it the high-neck with the fussy ruffles and bow? Or is it the combination of everything? Hilariously bad. And even worse on someone so young! Also: why is she so committed to those bangs?
As much as I disliked that gown on Dakota, she wasn’t the worst dressed of the evening. No, that honor went to Chloe Sevigny. Chloe wore Gucci and it was appallingly and hilariously bad. It’s so terrible that I love that she wore it.
Like Kim Kardashian, Diane Kruger eschewed the sponsor of the evening, Gucci. Diane instead went with this Monique Lhuillier Spring 2016 look. I love the pants. I don’t even hate the whole look together.
Salma Hayek’s husband owns Gucci. So Salma wore Gucci. I’m still complaining about Gucci trying to make this shade of bubble-gum pink “happen.” It’s not happening. Salma’s skin and hair look very pretty though.
Gwyneth Paltrow in Gucci. I like this color on her a lot, and while I appreciate the craftsmanship of the dress (in close-ups, the detailing is lovely), this isn’t really the best look for Gwyneth. Also: poorly styled with the flat-ironed, center-part hair.
Kelly Rohrbach has been doing more red carpets for the past few months. Which just goes to show you, dating Leonardo DiCaprio is still a good career move for a model. Leo was host of the evening (because Alejandro!), but he didn’t walk the carpet with Kelly, nor did he walk the carpet at all. I guess he’s trying to dial down the thirsty vibe.
