The Five Biggest Adrien Broner Stories of 2014

Three time world champion boxer, Adrien Broner, is a force to be reckoned with.  The 25 year old mad his debut to professional boxing in 2008, and has had a total of 30 fights to date.  With 22 of his wins ending in a knock out, and with only one loss to his name, Broner is often compared to the undefeated boxing great, Floyd Mayweather.  Broner has also pursued a rap career and has released several songs and worked with artists such as Soulja Boy.  But Broner’s rap career has been met with some resistance, with Floyd Mayweather suggesting that Broner needs to quit rapping and focus on boxing if he wants to be considered “great.”  While many of Broner’s antics have proven to be a distraction, he has shown that he is a fierce competitor. Here is a list of the five biggest Adrien Broner stories of 2014.

5. Adrien Broner donates 1,000 tickets to local boxing gyms.

When the top boxing promoter in Broner’s home state of Ohio, R&R Promotions, announced that they would be putting together an event in partnership with Put Down the Guns, Pick up the Gloves, Broner decided to get involved.  Broner donated 1,000 tickets to the event, Friday Night Fights, to local gyms and youth programs.

4. Adrien Broner suspended for racial remarks.

In May, The World Boxing Council (WBC) suspended Broner for making racially inappropriate remarks.  After winning his match against Carlos Molina, Broner made very insensitive remarks regarding Molina’s Mexican heritage. Following the fight the WBC issued this statement letting the public know that they will now tolerate any form of racial prejudice: “Adrien Broner , former WBC lightweight champion has offended many persons of the world with his words during the interview after the fight vs Molina.The World Boxing Council holds human equality as its banner and will not accept a former WBC champion to make racially offensive statements…”

3. Adrien Broner chokes Emmauel Taylor.

At a press conference earlier this month, things got a little heated between Broner and his most recent opponent, Emmanuel Taylor.   After Broner, threatened to bite Taylor’s beard off, the two began an argument which resulted in Broner wrapping his hands around Taylor’s neck and choking him.

2. Adrien Broner wants a rematch.

Last year, Broner lost his welterweight title by unanimous decision in a match against Marcos Maidana.  In January, Broner announced that he wanted to have a rematch with Maidana, stating that his mind is “set on war.”  Broner also admitted that Maidana had simply outboxed him and was “the better man that night.”  Although the rematch was originally intended to be held in April, it has still not taken place yet, probably due to Broner’s suspension.

1. Adrien Broner wins in Ohio.

After Broner’s surprising loss to Maidana, any felt that Broner needed to prove himself. Earlier this month, Broner was set to square of with Emmanual Taylor in Broner’s home state of Ohio, and there was much pressure on the once defeated boxer to perform, especially in Columbus.  Broner was able to defeat Taylor by unanimous decision and after  the fight he called out who he would like to see as his next opponent, Lucas Matthysse.
