This is not a drill, guys! Space Jam 2 is happening.
Fast & Furious director Justin Lin is in talks to direct a sequel to the 1996 masterpiece. Rumours of another instalment of the much loved live action/animated film have been kicking around for a while now but it appears things are finally underway.
The original film featured 90’s superstar Michael Jordan joining Bugs Bunny and Co. in a game of basketball against a team of skilfully enhanced aliens threatening the Looney Tunes freedom. (And gave us such classic jams as R. Kelly’s I Believe I Can Fly) We can only guess that Space Jam 2 will see the little guys back for a rematch.
Taking over for Michael Jordan in the lead role is Cleveland Cavillers’ LeBron James. He spurred sequel rumours when he and his SpringHill Entertainment company signed a deal with Warner Bros. in July. While he hasn’t had too much on-screen experience, James impressed movie-goers last year in Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck, so we’re hopeful he can hold his own alongside the likes of Daffy Duck.
Lin, whose previous credits include Community, Fast Five, and True Detective, is currently wrapping on the latest in the Star Trek franchise (Star Trek Beyond, due out for release in July). If that’s anything to go by, it looks like the Looney Tunes are in for a wild ride this time around.
Andrew Dodge (writer of 2013’s Bad Words, directed by Jason Bateman) and Alfredo Botello (a collaborator on Star Trek Beyond) are penning the screenplay alongside Lin.
It’s only early days but we can’t wait to see the Tune Squad come out of retirement and hit the court once more!
Excited about the sequel? Tells us your thoughts @celebmix!
