Samuel Alito has served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, since January 31, 2006. He was previously a U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, from December 10, 1987 to April 30, 1990, and a Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, from April 30, 1990 to January 31, 2006.

His father, Salvatore/Samuel Anthony Alati, a teacher, was born, c. 1914, in Montebello Jonico, Province of Reggio Calabria, Italy. His mother, Rose (Fradusco), was the daughter of Italian parents. He also has roots in Palazzo San Gervasio, Basilicata. He was raised in Hamilton Township, New Jersey.

He is married to Martha-Ann Bomgardner, with whom he has two children.
