The father of missing hiker Finn Creaney said his family is "preparing for the worst" after his rucksack was discovered on the banks of a Highland loch.

Finn, then 32, vanished on March 25, 2022, after going for a walk around Loch Naver in Sutherland. He had planned to walk around the water before heading south towards Golspie but disappeared without a trace.

In the nineteen months since his disappearance, his worried father, Mark, has been desperately trying to trace him. In an update to followers on TikTok, Mark, however, said his family was fearing the worst after his son's belongings were found by deer stalkers.

He now believes the young dad attempted to swim across the loch to shorten his journey.

Mark said: “As you know Finn went missing 18 months ago on his hike from Loch Naver to Golspie and despite searching the hills for all that time, we found no clues to him being there. That was until two weeks ago when a couple of deer stalkers on their way to Altnaharra came across Finn’s rucksack at the side of Loch Naver.

“Upon closer inspection of the rucksack and its belongings and a few other items, that I can’t really get into, we now believe that Finn attempted to swim the loch, in order to cut his journey time somewhat to the coast. Finn is a really strong swimmer and a good wild swimmer but for some reasons, we don’t know about, we fear that he may not have made the swim.

“Police divers were down last week searching the area where the rucksack was found, as a possible start point, and they came up with nothing.”

Countless searches involving specialist mountain rescue crews, a police helicopter as well as Finn’s loved ones have taken place the father-of-two's disappearance. Finn, whose son was born two months after he went missing, is described as being 5ft 11in tall, of a slim build with a light complexion and freckles on his arms and nose.

He has long brown hair down to his lower back and a full brown beard which was short in length when he was last seen. Anyone who may have seen Finn is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 or speak to any officer quoting reference 0912 of 28 March, 2022.
