David Beckham says Inter Miami has long-standing plans to create a women’s team.

The 48-year-old former England international said he and fellow co-owners Jorge and Jose Mas had discussed developing a women’s team at Inter Miami since first purchasing the franchise.

Beckham also highlighted the role his daughter Harper played in his desire to form a women’s team.

“I’ve always talked — and me, Jorge and Jose have always talked — about having a women’s team within the club,” Beckham told The Athletic.

“It’s something that we’ve spoken about from day one, actually. To bring a women’s team into our club would be something that we are definitely going to do. Having a daughter of my own, I want her to be inspired by something every single day.”

Beckham led an ownership group that bought Inter Miami in 2014 and the club began playing in MLS in 2020.

Inter Miami would not be the first MLS side with links to a women’s team. Three MLS ownership groups also run NWSL clubs: Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns share the same owners, as do Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash, and Orlando City and Orlando Pride.

The owners of USL sides North Carolina and Louisville City also run NWSL sides North Carolina Courage and Racing Louisville, while OL Reign are run by the owners of Ligue 1 and Division One Feminine side Olympique Lyonnais, OL group.

Salford City, the League Two club Beckham has been a co-owner of since 2019, formed a women’s side in 2018. Salford City Lionesses play in the North West Women’s Football League, the fifth tier of English football.

Beckham has been a visible supporter of the England Women’s team and visited the squad ahead of their 2019 World Cup quarter final against Norway when the Lionesses were managed by his former Manchester United teammate Phil Neville.
